Life among the Skeptics

"There are times, when all the world's asleep, the questions run so deep, for such a simple man. Please tell me who I am". Words from a famous song back in the 70's, I believe. Yet whether then or now, the questions remain the same. Why was I made? What is my purpose? Why is there so much evil in the world? Is there a God?

In Isaiah 22, 2700 years ago, he writes that some people in his day were saying "eat and drink, for tomorrow we die". Fatalism at its worst, with no purpose other than temporary pleasure. But Jesus in Mark 13 says there IS purpose in this life and the next: stay true to Him. Because He is coming back to take those who remain faithful into the unmatched beauty of Eternity. Either through death now or seeing Him come back with His angels, we will meet Him.

About 30 years later Peter writes to Believers that there will always be mockers who say "Where is your God now?" Nothing has changed since the start of time!" "You are idiots to believe that stuff".

So which is it? Is this life a purposeless drift toward annihilation? Do we just party it up, because tomorrow we die anyway? Or we do we believe this life is a practice run for the one to come, with plenty of opportunities to give ourselves away to those around us? To serve a God who gave us Jesus as a model for living and serving others?

It is the blessing and curse of free will. You have to choose. As Joshua put it in the Old Testament, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord". What do you think YOUR purpose is today?
